"There is no such thing as the future. Humankind faces multiple possible futures, many of which hinge on seemingly inconsequential evens."
The Muadru Chronicles[src]

The Muadru were an ancient ethnoreligious people whose mystics, before and during the age of the Old Empire, traveled throughout the planets of the Known Universe, leaving obscure markings and runestones on several planets before mysteriously vanishing at independent sites all over the galaxy. These wandering Muadru were thought to have either originated on Arrakis, or else to have settled there for a time during their travels. According to legend, the Muadru were also the ones to bring the sandtrout to the water-rich planet and to begin its desertification.

The spiral was the sacred Muadru symbol. They were known by the Zensunnis of Harmonthep, and had some connection with the cyborg Cogitors. During the Butlerian Jihad, Grand Patriarch Iblis Ginjo mentioned that Muadru runestones prophesied the end of the war, and asked Cogitor Kwyna to translate and give insight about them. However, Ginjo used the texts of these inscriptions highly out of context.
